Why picosecond, not nanosecond.

A picosecond laser fires energy in trillionths of a second — bursts so short they shatter pigment (sun spots, freckles, melasma) by photomechanical pressure, not heat alone. Older Q-switched (nanosecond) lasers rely mainly on heat to fragment pigment.

The shorter pulse breaks pigment into finer particles your lymphatic system clears more completely, with less heat to surrounding skin — which lowers the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a meaningful advantage for Asian and darker skin tones. A focus-lens mode concentrates energy into micro-zones to stimulate collagen, so the same device also refines texture, pores and acne scars.

What to expect in a session.

Numbing cream goes on 20–30 minutes beforehand, then the laser is passed across the area in a systematic pattern. Most people feel a light snapping sensation with each pulse; a full face takes 20–30 minutes.

Afterwards expect mild redness for a few hours up to a day or two. Treated pigment often darkens briefly, then flakes and fades — your doctor will explain what to expect for your specific concern.

Advanced Picosecond Laser is a medical laser treatment that uses very short pulses of laser energy (in picoseconds) to target specific skin concerns. It can help address pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and overall skin texture by breaking down pigment particles into smaller fragments that the body can naturally clear away. It is performed only by trained medical professionals in Singapore.

What skin concerns can Advanced Picosecond Laser address?

It may be considered for pigmentation such as freckles, sun spots, and age spots; melasma (hormonal pigmentation); acne scars and certain types of textural irregularities; and general skin rejuvenation (improving tone and clarity). Our doctors will assess whether the treatment is suitable for your skin type and concerns during a consultation.

How many sessions are recommended, and does it vary by concern?

Session counts vary meaningfully by concern type. For superficial sun spots, freckles and age spots, four to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart is typical — though individual lesions may respond in fewer. For melasma, six or more sessions with a conservative low-fluence protocol is common, alongside mandatory sun protection between sessions — melasma requires ongoing management rather than a fixed course. For acne scar texture improvement using the focus lens mode, three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is standard. Your doctor will set realistic expectations based on your specific pigmentation pattern.

Is there downtime after treatment?

Most people experience mild redness and skin sensitivity after the procedure, which typically subsides within 1–2 days. As everyone's skin reacts differently, our doctors will advise you on aftercare and what to expect based on your treatment.

Who is suitable, and is picosecond laser safer for Asian skin tones?

Suitable for adults with unwanted pigmentation (sun spots, freckles, age spots, post-inflammatory marks), melasma, acne scar texture, or dull uneven skin tone. Picosecond laser is generally well-tolerated by Asian skin because its photomechanical mechanism — shattering pigment via pressure rather than heat — causes less collateral thermal damage to surrounding tissue compared with older nanosecond Q-switched lasers. This reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is a significant concern in Fitzpatrick III–V skin types. Your doctor will assess your specific skin type and pigmentation before recommending treatment.

How soon can I see results — and does the timeline differ by concern?

For simple superficial pigmentation such as sun spots or freckles, visible fading typically occurs within two to three weeks of the first session as the lymphatic system clears the shattered pigment particles. For melasma, results are more gradual — a meaningful reduction usually becomes visible from the third or fourth session. For acne scar texture, the collagen remodelling stimulated by the focus lens mode continues between sessions, with the best textural improvements seen two to three months after the final session.

Is Advanced Picosecond Laser a permanent solution?

It can improve pigmentation and skin quality, but new pigmentation may still develop due to sun exposure, ageing, or hormonal changes. Maintenance treatments and good sun protection are usually recommended to sustain results.
