Medical Weight Management
A doctor-supervised medical weight management programme using an approved injectable medication. Designed for adults with a BMI ≥27 who have not achieved sufficient results through lifestyle changes alone. Monitored by MOH-licensed GPs at our Orchard and Tampines clinics.
How the medication works.
A doctor-supervised medical weight management programme built around a prescription injectable, for adults who haven’t reached their goals through lifestyle changes alone and who meet the clinical criteria. Every prescription follows a full assessment by an MOH-licensed doctor.
The medication acts on receptors involved in appetite regulation and blood-glucose control — it may reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying, helping lower calorie intake. It’s given once weekly with a pre-filled pen on a graduated dosing schedule to limit side effects.
What the programme involves.
- Initial consultation and full medical assessment with a licensed doctor
- Review of medical history, current medications and health status
- A prescription and graduated dosing plan tailored to you
- Ongoing monitoring appointments to track progress and adjust dosing
- Lifestyle and dietary guidance throughout
Regular monitoring is a required part of the programme, not optional. Results vary with adherence, lifestyle and individual physiology — we don’t make specific weight-loss claims.
Medical Weight Management FAQ
What is Medical Weight Management?
Medical Weight Management is a doctor-supervised programme that uses a prescription injectable medication to support weight management in eligible adults. The medication works by helping regulate appetite and supporting blood sugar control, which may assist individuals in managing calorie intake as part of an overall medical weight management plan. All prescriptions are issued by MOH-licensed doctors at IVI Medical Clinic following a thorough medical assessment.
How does the medication work?
The medication acts on hormone receptors involved in appetite regulation and glucose metabolism. This may help eligible patients feel fuller after meals and reduce overall food intake when combined with appropriate lifestyle adjustments such as dietary changes and physical activity. It is administered as a once-weekly self-injection using a pre-filled pen device.
Who may be suitable?
Medical weight management may be considered for adults with a BMI ≥ 27 with at least one weight-related health condition, or BMI ≥ 30, who have not achieved sufficient results through lifestyle changes alone. Suitability is determined during a medical consultation based on individual health status, current medications and weight management history.
How often is the medication administered?
The medication is typically administered as a once-weekly self-injection, as prescribed by the doctor. The dosage starts low and is gradually increased over time based on individual response and tolerance, as determined at follow-up appointments.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Weight loss outcomes vary significantly between individuals. Factors including lifestyle habits, dietary adherence, physical activity level, and individual physiology all influence results. A doctor will discuss realistic expectations during consultation — we do not make specific weight loss claims.
Are there side effects?
As with any prescription medication, some individuals may experience side effects. Commonly reported effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, constipation or digestive discomfort — particularly during the dose escalation phase. Your doctor will discuss potential risks and side effects in full during consultation.
Do I need to make lifestyle changes?
Yes. The medication is intended to be used as part of a comprehensive weight management programme that includes dietary adjustments, physical activity and ongoing medical monitoring. It is not a standalone solution and is most effective when combined with lifestyle change.
How do I get started?
The first step is a medical consultation at IVI Medical Clinic, where a doctor will assess your eligibility, discuss your weight management history and goals, and determine whether this programme may be appropriate for you. A prescription is issued only following this assessment.
