Thulium 1927nm, fractional renewal.

A thulium fractional laser at 1927nm — a wavelength absorbed by water in the superficial skin — creating micro-columns of energy in a fractional pattern. Treating only part of the skin each session, with intact tissue between zones, speeds the skin’s natural renewal while keeping downtime manageable.

As treated micro-columns are replaced with fresh cells over a course, the complexion becomes brighter, more even and smoother — which is why it’s used for dullness, superficial pigmentation, texture and mild photoageing.

What to expect in a session.

Numbing cream goes on 30 minutes beforehand, then the handpiece is passed systematically over the area as a warm, prickling sensation; a full face takes 30–45 minutes.

Skin is red and warm like mild sunburn afterwards, with light peeling over two to four days. Consistent sun protection through recovery is essential to avoid post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Is Skin Brightening Laser the same as a BB Laser?

"BB Laser" is a popular colloquial name used in Singapore and South Korea for thulium fractional laser treatment at the 1927nm wavelength. The name refers to the BB-cream-like effect — patients often notice a smoother, more even complexion with a subtle "filtered" quality after a course of sessions. Medically, it is a fractional laser resurfacing treatment performed by a licensed doctor using a regulated device.

How does Skin Brightening Laser improve skin tone and pigmentation?

The 1927nm thulium wavelength targets water in the superficial skin layers, creating micro-columns of controlled thermal injury in a fractional pattern. The skin responds by accelerating its natural exfoliation and renewal cycle — shedding the treated micro-zones and replacing them with fresher, less pigmented skin cells. Superficial pigmentation such as sun spots, freckles and uneven discolouration is disrupted and gradually fades over the treatment course as the new skin emerges.

How is Skin Brightening Laser different from a picosecond laser?

Both address pigmentation but through different mechanisms. Skin Brightening Laser is a resurfacing treatment — it works by renewing the outer skin layer and improving overall tone, brightness and texture at the surface. Picosecond laser targets pigment particles directly using ultra-short energy pulses that shatter them at depth without resurfacing. Picosecond laser is generally suited for deeper or more discrete pigmented lesions; Skin Brightening Laser addresses diffuse dullness, uneven tone and overall skin surface quality. Your doctor will advise which is more appropriate for your concern — or whether a combination approach is best.

What is the downtime and what does skin look like after treatment?

After a Skin Brightening Laser session, the skin appears red and feels warm — similar to mild sunburn. Over the following two to four days, a fine bronzing and light peeling occurs as the treated micro-columns shed. This is normal and expected — it is the treated skin renewing. The peeling is generally subtle (not the dramatic flaking of ablative resurfacing) and can be managed with a gentle moisturiser. Consistent SPF50 sunscreen use throughout recovery is essential to prevent post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Can Skin Brightening Laser treat melasma?

Melasma can be partially improved with thulium laser, but it requires careful management. Melasma is a hormonally driven pigmentation condition that is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and tends to recur after laser treatment. Most doctors treat melasma conservatively with low-intensity settings and combine the laser with topical depigmenting agents and strict sun protection. Your doctor will assess your melasma type and advise realistic expectations — melasma management is typically long-term rather than a single-course solution.

How many sessions are recommended and how far apart?

Three to five sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is the typical course for meaningful improvement in skin brightness and tone. Results build progressively between sessions as the skin renews. Patients with mild dullness or early pigmentation may achieve satisfactory results in two to three sessions; more significant photoageing or diffuse pigmentation typically benefits from a full course. Maintenance sessions every three to six months, alongside consistent sun protection, help sustain and extend results.

Is there a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after treatment?

PIH — where the skin produces excess melanin in response to laser energy — is a risk with any laser treatment and is more common in darker and Asian skin tones. Thulium fractional laser at 1927nm is generally well-tolerated when used at appropriate settings for Asian skin, but the risk is not zero. Your doctor will assess your Fitzpatrick skin type and history of PIH before treatment. Strict sun avoidance and SPF50 use after every session are the most effective measures to reduce PIH risk.
